A trick of annotating

What are the steps to annotate a document?


Many writers of books, documents, or articles use artistic languages to convey messages to the societies. They normally use languages that will not be directly telling what is meant, they love their readers to find out what was targeted to reach to them and not just reading and see everything meant, and that is literature. People use different ways to try to understand what was meant in that particular type of writing, some people use analyzes that are already prepared that explains about the art of work and what was meant to reach to the audiences, some becomes their own artist and find what was meant on their own and thy analyze books by their own, and the best way to use in order to analyze the article, a book, or a document is annotation.

Annotation means to add information and comments in the document, it also means to note important things you want to know about that particular document you are reading and what would you like to get from that document, there are different aims of annotating documents, that is people needs different things out of the document and they have to annotate so as to get these things, here are some of the purposes of annotating documents:

1. To find specific things from the document 

Some people are annotating documents so they that they can different things that they want from that document, and everyone will annotate the document in a way that they get what they want, and some people may want multiple things from the document and they also will have to annotate and find all things they want. 

People may annotate the document to find proverbs so they will use annotation to find proverbs, others will annotate so that they get verbs in the document or maybe others may want words chosen specifically by the writer and find their meaning specifically. All these and many more may sie annotation to find all things they want from the document. 

To find things from the document may be easily achieved using the annotation method and many people use annotation to find what they want from the document, I didn't know about annotating until during my stay in the USA I walked in the class of this the most beautiful teacher Pre IB English in Vestal high school and this lady taught me how to annotate and made me annotate articles every week and write about I annotated and she opened my mind and gave me the most usable trick in reading books and documents.

She taught me how to be a good annotator and she promised us that one day we will appreciate what she taught us that day, and it didn't take even a year when I realized what she said as when I wanted to take a national examination within six months and I was so behind and I had to catch up things I missed for the whole year. I used the trick of annotating all of my books and I managed to cover everything up. 

Here I was finding specific things and that is important information from the books that I may use to pass my examination without using the whole bunch of books, and I advise students to use annotation as a way to make summaries of what they have learned so as to BREAK A BULK OF BOOKS INTO SMALL MANAGEABLE TASKS. I have been always thanking my teacher for teaching me that important factor of reading and now when I read books I use that technique to get important lessons from them.

2. To focus on the documents you are reading

Many people say that they can not focus when reading a document or a book that is why they do not read books usually, but many experts have proved that when annotating the document or a book make you focused and being interested in what you are reading. Annotating will make you see no burden of that book and as long as you understand what is talked about you will find it simple to continue and you will be curious about what will be written next

Teachers should use this was to make students read their literature books or large paragraphed books and they will be shocked by how students will be interested in reading and they will increase the rate of understanding what is being talked about. When students prepare short notes and they know what exactly was meant by what is written they will study easy but smart and they will pass their tests.

3. Writing about them

Sometimes we read articles and books so that we can write about them, either we want to write analyzes or we may choose the specific topic we want to write about from the document you were reading. Some people may want to write about the mistakes done in the document so they will read it in the way of annotating it so that they write with evidence

Also, sometimes we are annotating because we have plans to participate in the discussions with other people so we annotate to know what should we write about and maybe to find important quotes to strength our points that we are going to discuss


Annotating styles can be different according to the aims of the annotator, here I will show common methods of annotating documents or books

Highlighting important things

Annotate Based on the Reading Purpose
One of the methods of annotating documents is highlighting important things, this method is pretty common and it is usable for every purpose of annotating a document, let's say you are annotating so that you can get important words in the text, you may use a highlighter to highlight all words that you choose. And let's say you are annotating for the purpose of keeping yourself focused you will be focused when you see those important things that you have highlighted. 


You can also use highlighting to add information or comments to the documents and books. Some people use the highlighting method to show the mistakes made by the writer of the document and suggest the corrections.

The highlighting method of annotation has been a pretty easier way for me to save notes when for one way or another I can not take notes, so I use the highlighter to save those important notes for reference at later times. Keeping my important notes highlighted has helped to save places that I didn't understand when I read about that and also has helped me to know exactly where to study when the exam is very close and avoiding to read the whole book.

Taking notes

Taking notes is another method of annotating a document, this is close to highlighting and sometimes it is done together with the highlighting method. Here you take important notes instead of highlighting them. This method may also be used when the book you are using is not yours so you can not add a highlight in that so you will have to take note of what is important.

Taking notes may be done at other place or maybe in the same document, you may add notes or signs in the document that will keep you reminded of something you have been reading example you can write your question in the book you are reading and that will keep you remember hat something is not clear and you need help, but also you can use a question mark to show something that you didn't get very well

Taking notes may also be used to record all new words that you may want to find definitions of them at other places or ask other people about them

Taking notes is the best way when you are annotating for the purpose of writing articles about what you have read about, so you will take notes that will guide you to write the best quality about the thing
